The Hungarian Patchwork Guild is pleased to invite its members as well as international quilters for a themed contest
Masculine …
The quilts received will be displayed during Borderless, the Guild’s annual festival, in Budapest, held 5-7 November 2010.
Quilts that represent traditional masculine qualities, attitudes, values, habits or preferences in a realistic or symbolic manner are expected, so masculinity may also appear in the colours, shapes and materials used.
Any technique (piecing, applique, embroidery, photo transfer) is allowed as long as the finished work satisfies the basic requirement of quilts (must have three layers) and is related to the theme. The work must be specifically made for the contest: the judges will not assess quilts that have been previously shown in exhibitions, or printed or electronic publications.
The entries must bear a code word. Quilters may submit no more than two quilts. If two pieces are entered, two different code words must be chosen.
Dimensions: The shorter side must be at least 80 cm (31”), while the longer side must not exceed 180 cm (71”). In the case of miniature quilts the longer side is maximum 40 cm (16”). On the back of the quilt along the top edge a sleeve of 10 cm (4”) must be sewn (5 cm (2”) on miniature quilts). Also on the back, a label must be attached in the bottom left corner, indicating the quilter’s name, the title of the work, the year of creation, and the quilter’s telephone number or email address. Another piece of fabric of approximately the same size showing the code word only must be basted on top of the label, which hides the details of the quilt.
Judging: The quilts will be assessed by three independent judges, who will use the following criteria:
After the contest each quilter will receive written feedback on the quilt(s) submitted.
The judges will award the following prizes: a) The best miniature quilt b) The best traditional quilt c) The best innovative quilt d) The best modern quilt e) The best hand quilting f) The best machine quilting g) The best use of colour h) The best group quilt (min. 4 persons) i) The best first-time quilter j) The best young quilter (aged 12-18)
A quilt may receive more than one prize.
The judges reserve the right to exclude quilts that are smaller or larger than specified, or are not related to the theme.
Registration fee: EUR 25, payable to the account of the “Magyar Foltvarró Céh” held at OTP Bank. Account number: 11703006-20410559. Further bank details are provided upon request.
The entries must be received by no later than 27 September 2010.
